Terminology

Abrasion resistance

The ability of the grout to withstand wear. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-2.

Adhesion strength

The maximum force per unit surface area measured in a shear or tensile strength test. Depending on the type of adhesive, it is measured in accordance with EN 1348, EN 1324 or EN 12003 standards.

Adjustability time

The maximum interval of time during which it is possible to modify the position of tiles applied to an adhesive without significant loss of adhesion strength.

Cementitious adhesive (C)

A pre-batched powder consisting of hydraulic binders, aggregates, polymers and other organic additives, to be mixed with water or a liquid additive prior to use.

Cementitious grout (CG)

A pre-batched powder consisting of hydraulic binders, aggregates and organic and inorganic additives, to be mixed with water or a liquid additive prior to use.

Ceramic tile grout

Any product suitable for filling joints between ceramic tiles.

Chemical resistance

The capacity of a grout to withstand chemical agents. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-1.

Deformability

The ability of a hardened adhesive to deform due to stress between the tile and the substrate.

Dispersion adhesive (D)

A ready-to-use mixture of organic binders in the form of polymeric aqueous dispersions, organic additives and inert fillers.

Grouting

The process of filling joints between ceramic tiles (apart from elastic movement or expansion joints).

Latex (liquid additive)

A special polymeric aqueous dispersion which must be added to cementitious products prior to use.

Maturing time

The time that elapses before a cementitious product is ready for use after being mixed.

Maximum applicable thickness

Maximum thickness of adhesive between the substrate and the back of the tiles after installation.

Mechanical compressive strength

The maximum value at breakage when a compressive force is applied to two opposing faces of a grout prism. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-3.

Mechanical flexural strength

The maximum value at breakage when a flexural force is applied to a grout prism at three points. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-3.

Notched trowel

A tool provided with notches for applying adhesive in a series of ribs of the same thickness on the substrate and/or the back of the tiles.

Open time

The maximum interval of time that can elapse between applying the adhesive and installing the tiles with a mechanical tensile strength equal or superior to the requirements of standard EN 12004. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 1346.

Pot life

The maximum period of time during which the product can be used after being mixed.

Primer

A polymeric dispersion or solution used to improve the adhesion capacity and/or durability and compactness of a substrate prior to application of adhesive.

Reaction resin adhesive (R)

A mixture of synthetic resins, organic additives and inert fillers, which hardens by means of a chemical reaction with a catalyst. Available in one or more components

Reaction resin grout (RG)

A mixture of synthetic resins, organic and inorganic additives and inert fillers, which hardens by means of a chemical reaction. Available in one or more parts.

Shelf life

The length of time for which a product stored in its original packaging maintains its characteristics in given ambient conditions.

Shrinkage

Reduction in the length of a grout prism during hardening. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-4

Substrate

A flat, rigid surface on which tiles are installed.

Thin-set installation

A method for installing tiles on a flat surface using an adhesive. The adhesive is normally applied using a notched trowel to obtain a layer of uniform thickness.

Time before cleaning

The minimum time that must elapse between grouting the joints and finishing the surface of the grout and cleaning the tiles.

Time before grouting

The minimum time that must elapse between laying tiles and grouting the joints.

Time before use

The minimum time that must elapse before a tiled surface is put into service.

Two surface application

The adhesive is applied to both the substrate and the back of the tiles. It is important not to exceed the maximum recommended thickness of adhesive. The tiles are placed before a film has time to form on the surface of the adhesive.

Vertical slip (sag)

Indicates the downward movement of a tile laid on an adhesive applied to a vertical surface. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 1308.

Walk on time

The minimum time that must elapse before a tiled surface is ready for foot traffic.

Water absorption

The quantity of water absorbed by capillary action when the surface of the grout prism is in contact with water and without additional pressure being applied. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 12808-5.

Wetting capacity

Measures the capacity of an adhesive to wet the back of the tile. It is measured in accordance with standard EN 1347.
